Equine Protection Fund October Fundraising Drive to benefit needy horses
October 22nd, 2012

The Equine Protection Fund, a partnership between Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) and New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF), has launched an October Fundraising Drive. By the end of the month, the drive hopes to raise $10,000 for assistance and relief programs benefitting horses. APNM, the fundraising organizer, is encouraging its members, supporters, and the state equestrian community at large to help spread the word and contribute.

“In the short term, this fundraiser is to ensure we have as robust a safety net as possible to help horses this winter,” said Phil Carter, Equine Campaign Manager for APNM. “Last winter, hay prices and shortages, in addition to inclement weather, left some families in the lurch. We’re asking the New Mexican community to join us so together we can make sure horses stay healthy and with their families.”

New Mexico Community Foundation asked to step down from environmental database outreach activities
Los Alamos National Laboratory taking over responsibilities related to public training and education for Intellus NM

Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 2, 2012— After eight years of providing public education and outreach related to environmental monitoring information from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) site, New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) has been asked by the Department of Energy to relinquish its responsibility as outreach coordinator and database manager of the Intellus NM Project. The Department of Energy (DOE) notified NMCF on September 18, 2012 that, due to financial constraints and uncertainties in DOE Environmental Management’s budget, NMCF would no longer be funded to provide training, education and outreach to the public on behalf of Intellus NM. Additionally, LANL and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) are currently negotiating the closure of the 2007 Settlement Agreement and Stipulated Final Order, also known as the Chromium Settlement, which required LANL to turn their environmental data over to an independent manager. The closure of this agreement allows LANL to manage their data without oversight or involvement from a third-party. Read the rest of this entry »
